The Migrant Stone

Leila El-Kayem

2020

The history of migrants immigrating to the Netherlands mirrors the country’s colonial past. Turkey, Morocco, Indonesia and Suriname make up almost half of the 21.7% of ethnic groups in the Netherlands . The neighbourhood of Rotterdam Noord is a melting pot of these cultures. The over 2 KM strip along the Hofbogen is testament to the vibrant and dynamic communities that have settled there. The Installation The Migrant Stone questions how we can connect these communities to each other reflecting their colonial past and creating a discourse between these migrant bodies through the perspective of stone.
