Wind is Alive

Wind is inextricably tied to life. Wind is alive and gives life. “Wind is alive” allows to reinterpret Maasvlakte, the recent extension of Rotterdam’s port, as an ecosystem where different forms of life exist through the mediation of wind.  Seven kinetic sculptures are transformed into moving creatures by the wind.  Each creature belongs in a habitat, abstracted from Maasvlakte, and produces an effect in (on) it: a trace. Each trace exists in a specific temporal framework. From a trace without future, a shadow, to long lasting marks on a petrified surface. Reunited all together, the different habitats constitute an “aeolian” ecosystem, namely an ecosystem which owes its existence and nourishment to wind.
