This project critically examines the gentrification of a specific area in Rotterdam through a film project, where found objects are reassembled to create striking, grotesque compositions. The piece delves into urban transformation, exploring the socio-cultural impacts beneath these changes. By portraying gentrification as a form of structural catastrophe, the work uses unsettling compositions and performances to present a nuanced perspective on the social and spatial effects of gentrification. The parallel material commentary between the production of grotesque objects and the gentrified city as a design object further reinforces this critique, encouraging audiences to reflect on the unsettling consequences of urban development. Through a deliberate subversion of “designed objects,” the project highlights the tension between the carefully crafted, gentrified cityscape and the underlying, distorted realities that arise from the displacement and reshaping of communities.
