Fascine carpet

This project connects the spatial experience and natural landscape of Biesbosch with the Persian carpet and its intricate knots. Fascine mattresses, which have been in the riverbed for over 100 years as a human invention to control floods, form a unique relationship with the loom’s structure, echoing the process of carpet weaving. Using the mattress as a base, I weave Persian carpet knots onto it, symbolically bringing the mattresses to the surface and allowing them to “flow” on the water, narrating the stories of how the region was shaped. The pattern on this “Fascine carpet” is based on the first flood map that forever altered Biesbosch, linking cultural integration with natural transformation.
