BTS: Behind The Scaffolding

2024

This project uses Katendrecht as a framework to critique urban spectacle, commodification, and control. Scaffolding represents the performative nature of gentrification: a spectacle that benefits from its image, while the impact of displacement is relegated to the shadows.

An interactive mechanism highlights the performative nature of urban aesthetics. The blank canvases serve as abstract facades, concealing the power dynamics in urban life and the start of the collapse – where mechanical interventions erase the human and the biological.

By integrating algorithmic interventions, scaffoldings become a speculative reading machine, detached from human choice, continuously transforming to reflect the socio-symbolic narratives of urban life. This speculative approach exposes the transitory nature of urban spaces, highlighting the commodification of identity and history in spaces like Katendrecht: a stage for endless performances.
