Domestic Territories is a design based studio, during which we look at the interior and its thresholds as mediators between living and non-living beings, which defines forms of occupation and relation between habitats, species, climates, territories. With Domestic Territories we engage with the concepts of ecology – the relations between living beings and their environment – and domesticity – the construction of an interior, as well as the result of “domestication”, the active process through which people transform, select and represent other forms of life, both around them, and at a planetary scale.
During the studio we challenge and expand our definition of “domus”, the home, interpreting it as a home-world for both humans and non-humans, in order to build a space for negotiation, intimacy and co-tenancy between different species – a world in which, in the words of Emanuele Coccia, “our roommates are no longer just husbands, wives and daughters, but penguins, seals, lions, bacteria and viruses.“
The course develops through the design and prototyping of mediative objects, material and immaterial thresholds between the corporeal scale of the body, and the political-ecological scales of the territory. Through these objects and spaces, the ambition of the course is to question what the domestic is, what constitutes a territory, and to imagine spaces and tools proposing new forms of communion, intimacy, beauty, and engagement across scales, species, and atmospheres.
Over the course of 5 years, Domestic Territories investigated man-made landscapes and their ecologies in the Netherlands, from Maasvlakte, the latest exertion of the port of Rotterdam, to Flevoland, the last province of the Netherlands, reclaimed over the 20th century, and currently the Biesbosch natural park.
