Blind Spot

Isabella Fiorante

2021

This project explores the thresholds of recognition regarding the human face and by extension the relationship between accuracy and detectability. The digitalized portion of this project obscures the face by varying degrees of pixelization, without ever reaching the point of presenting an identifiable face. The physical extension of this project was created by casting a mould of the face and then repeatedly casting new moulds based on the previous cast, and not the original face. With each repeated casting, the resulting sculpture would lose identifying details, and slowly became a more and more generic face over time. This project asks at what point does a face become a face? At what point does a face become a person?
