Piet Zwart Institute, Master of Interior Architecture and Retail Design [MIARD] invites you to our Conversation # 1 The Interior after the Internet.
On the occasion of the current MIARD exhibition ‘Out of Sight’ at Milan Design Week, Ventura Lambrate, please join us: Alex Suárez and Füsun Türetken in conversation with Stefano Colombo, Eugenio Cosentino, Luca Marullo of Parasite 2.0, students and guests.
The complex environments that we inhabit are defined by boundaries that have changed as the ongoing techno-industrialization extends into our daily lives, that will be defined by more data and flows, social media and the black liquid screens of smartphones and laptops. According to Anne Friedberg the fragmented “dematerialized reality that we perceive is defined by the material and the immaterial sphere and the tension between them.” It is fragmented as we oscillate between the real and the virtual in an instant – by a click, by opening and closing windows on our digital devices. The brief breaks that occur when we navigate within our daily mixed realities, in between these two worlds, changes the space-time dimension and creates a new time-space.
The “contamination of real space by virtual space” introduced by Paul Virilio means that “each surface is an interface between two environments and is ruled by an activity and exchange, for example a computer screen and the ‘world’ it represents.” Hence, the surface per se demonstrates “the contamination at work.” Through computerized practices and this exchange between two environments we live our spatio-temporal experience in an alienated way and in separation. Mediated through technological exchange and immaterial boundaries this instantaneous transmission is most present in interiors.
How then do we imagine our interiors after the Internet? What happens to the interior with the arrival of radio waves, data flows and smart technologies? Will an altered typology occur? Do surfaces become our new airfield in a Post-Interior age? What are the cultural, social and personal effects? Should we rid ourselves of normative binary terms such as interior and exterior, and instead embrace a neo-time-space, an infinite galaxy of realities?

Parasite 2.0 is a collective, established by Stefano Colombo, Eugenio Cosentino and Luca Marullo in Milan. This open laboratory is based on the notion of free exchange of ideas, inquiring the state of urban life in the era of “webcrazia”, of liquid and diffused crisis, of hyper-planning of cities and our lives.
Alex Suárez is an architect and educator. He is Program Director of MIARD at the Piet Zwart Institute and graduation project advisor at Willem de Kooning Academy Rotterdam University. He works on design projects via SpaceOperaForm.
Füsun Türetken is an architect and writer. She is lecturer at [MIARD], Piet Zwart Institute and Head of Visual Culture at Willem de Kooning Academy Rotterdam University. Füsun is a research fellow with Research Architecture, Goldsmiths University London.
