The Unswept Table

Saskia De Fabritiis

2020

During the contemporary pandemic, the home became a space meant to include, embrace toxicity and cultivate it until its decay: the domestic territory was transformed into a paradox of safety and defence. Domesticity integrates catastrophe.

The kitchen table becomes the archetype of the incorporation of distant biological and ecological hazards into the domestic realm. Through the introduction of nourishments and matter inside our homes and bodies, the kitchen table becomes the hinge between body and the environment, geography and architecture. It becomes an active physiological element, a space of investigation for the understanding and acknowledgement of the wider environment reacting to weight, gravity, light. The domestic and the global scale are merged on a surface that brings together people and the matter placed on it, as they perform together a choreography.
