The Synecdochic Nature

A speculation on the future of meat consumption

What if development in technology allows us to reproduce meat without the environmental costs of breeding cattle? I imagine that we would be able to produce meat like we nowadays 3D print an object; once you have the right code and the specification, it’s just a matter of materializing it. The new space of meat consumption is the anti-butcher: a highly clean and neat space, surrounded by four gridded glass walls and white shelves where all kinds of meat are exhibited.

The meat shop, once a crude, contaminated place, turns into an aseptic container of anti nature, that nature that used to be part of an animal body, and that now is a product spit out from a machine, that mixing the chosen components, produces a remembrance of meat, an idea of it.
