Liminal Space, Space of Liminality

Aleksandra Oszczak

2019

My exploration of bathing has a ceremonial character by implementing a reiterative process, using my own body as an instrument and subject. A liminal space of transition is an inherent part of the bathing experience. Throughout history an entire bathing architecture has been developed to serve this ritual. The liminal can be understood on many levels; as the transition from liquid state of water into vapour, the exchange of water molecules between human skin and the bath environment or as the phase in-between two states of being, from weary to regenerated. I transpose qualities of flow onto a domestic interior and consequently create a new fluid environment. Instead of approaching the act of bathing as a cleansing body treatment, the spatial solution is a ritual that favors mind regeneration through bodily experience and questions the domestic interior and its traditional compartmentation.
