Aura’s Matter

Michaela Vilucchi

2017

In our era of total accessibility to any digital art archive and open sources, one wonders why the physical place of a Museum is still visited by millions of people every day around the globe. In order to embrace the pilgrim walk to a physical place, this project attempts to decode the visual language of paintings in physical materiality in order to maximize the contemplation of one single painting.

By translating digital metadata, hence the virtual information that exists about one single art piece, in material objects, this project aims to merge the digital and the physical in order to achieve a physical experience in a physical place (the museum). Hence, four objects based on the metadata of the painting ‘Saint John writing the Gospel’ are shown in this exhibition, provoking an insightful understanding of the techniques, materiality, historicity and contemporary connotation that this painting provides.
